My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
Semichemical wheat straw pulp prepared by soda cooking was pretreated with enzyme-mediator systems, which included manganese peroxidase (MnP) in combination with Tween 80 or glucose oxidase-glucose couple and laccase in combination with I-hydroxybenzotriazole (HBT). MnP was purified from Phlebia radiata 79 (ATCC 64658) and laccase of Trametes (Coriolus) hirsuta was a commercial preparation. Alterations in paper-making properties and in chemical composition of biotreated pulps were studied using various analyses such as evaluation of physical properties of microhandsheets, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and analytical pyrolysis/gas chromatography/mass spectromentry (PY/GC/MS). Although differences between the enzymatically treated pulps and untreated control were rather small, some favourable or prominent effects were caused by Tween 80 alone or in combination with MnP and by lactase-HBT treatment following by chelating step with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)/Mg 2+ .
