Low molecular weight phenolate compounds isolated from the fungus Gloeophylum trabeum were structurally identified. The compounds (Gt chelators) were found to have the capability to reduce multiple moles of ferric iron in a cyclic manner, and in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, to promote hydroxyl radical production. When wood was treated with the Gt chelator system, under the appropriate conditions, delamination of the S 1 -compound middle lamellae interface was observed. Little degradation of the S2 layer of the wood cell wall was observed after treatment with this system under controlled conditions. The data suggest that, with appropriate chelation agents, trace amounts of iron in pulp in bleaching systems requiring hydrogen peroxide may not be deleterious to fiber integrity and that under appropriate conditions chelating systems may be employed to promote delignification for improvement of pulp...
