Fusiform rust of Southern pines reduces the economic competitiveness of Southern forests. The galls which characterize this disease differ structurally and biochemically from asymptomatic pine tissue. We hypothesize that these differences are mediated by changes in pine gene transcription which are induced by the causative agent of the disease, Cronartium quercuum f. sp. fusiforme. In order to improve our understanding of how C. q. fusiforme causes gall formation on pines, we are using RNA fingerprinting to ident& pine genes whose transcription is altered by-C. q, futiiforme infection and to identify C. q. futiiforme genes expressed in galls. To date, 26 cDNA fragments displaying different expression patterns in galled and asymptomatic tissues have been identified.
