Key Characteristics of Linerboard Corrugating Medium and Roll Stock Mechanical Condition and Their Influence on the Manufacture of Corrugated Products, 1990 Corrugated Containers Conference Proceedings
W. McGratten, The Linerboard/Corrugated Subcommittee of the TAPPI Papermaker’s Committee--Key characteristics of linerboard, corrugating medium and roll stock mechanical condition, that operating experience has shown may have an influence on the corrugated manufacturing process, are identified. The characteristics are defined, recognized test procedures to measure them are referenced or, where measurement is inappropriate, preferred attributes of the characteristics are described. The influence that the characteristics may have on corrugated box plant operations is discussed and some common problems that can arise when the characteristic varies from a preferred condition, value or range of values are outlined. Comments are presented on the impact of efforts to control the characteristics of containerboards in the papermaking process and some converter techniques to minimize the effects of undesirable mechanical condition of roll stock are proposed.
