Remote Ordering System, 1992 Corrugated Containers Conference Proceedings

Olivia Kalas--Customer Service, and more specifically Quality Customer Service, is the driving force of the 90s. The pressure for JIT, or Just In Time, manufacturing and delivery is already resulting in shorter lead times and in many cases, smaller order quantities. For the corrugated plant that has sheet plant customers as a large part of their business, this can be very critical. The sheet plant relies on the corrugated plant for its raw material. The status of its orders in the corrugated plant impacts directly on the status of orders for the sheet plant’s customers. Corrugated plants have not had an efficient method for getting orders into their system quickly or returning status information to their customers. A Remote Ordering System would streamline the order entry process and provide box plant customers with more accurate and timely order status information. An emerging technology that can support this system is EDI, or Electronic Data Interchange, which allows computers to exchange information. This paper will describe a Remote Ordering System developed utilizing EDI technology to address the needs of a midwest corrugated box plant.
