New Approach to Singleface Combining, 1993 Corrugated Containers Conference Proceedings

Willis--Since the implementation of Alternate Rule 41, the paper grades in the USA have followed the trend that has been established in other markets of eclectic furnish and lighter weight liners. Single facers today typically have problems as speeds increase with such grades with pressure roll marking and/or cutting of the liner. By eliminating the pressure roll from a new, innovative SINGLE FACER and replacing it with an extended nip pressure system, that problem is solved and many opportunities for further exploitation come to mind; e.g., printing on either/or both sides of the board, preprint or folds run on top away from the hot plates, very light weight liners, films for moisture barriers, etc.

Human concerns are very important to every box plant. The reduced noise levels of this SINGLE FACER are a major environmental improvement for the industry.

The elimination of the pressure roll gap adjustment and the automation of that on the glue roll has freed the operator’s attention thus allowing him to be able to prepare the increased number of rolls required to handle the proliferation of paper grades along with shorter and shorter run lengths as required in today’s box plants.
