Fresh Look at Double Facer Design, 1993 Corrugated Containers Conference Proceedings
Peter Horton--Using the concept of uniformly applied variable pressure to maintain and ensure effective conductive heat transfer and bonding in Double Facers, along with the experience gained in retrofitting the Short Press package to a number of existing Double Facers, we have redesigned our equipment to take full advantage of the benefits gained to maximize performance and reduce costs.
The result of this effort is an entirely new look to the machine which eliminates all weight or hold down rolls in both the heating and traction sections and dramatically reduces the overall length of the complete machine to under thirty-eight (38) feet. A liner preheater is included in addition to the twelve (12) multi-chambered, single pass heater plates, all of which are designed for rapid heat transfer while eliminating the need for pressure vessel certification.
The overall length of the heating section is twenty-seven feet, eight inches, while the traction/pulling section, utilizing the same applied pressure concept, is only ten feet, 2 inches in length including the pulleys. The significant reduction in the overall length of the Double Facer, while providing production speed capabilities in excess of 1,000 feet per minute, with greatly enhanced board quality, offers major savings in two areas.
