Non-Wood Pulping Technology Update, 1993 China Paper Conference Proceedings

Dr. Manfred Judt--"I am very grateful and thankful to TAPPI International Division, Atlanta, USA, who asked me to give an update on non-wood pulping technology here during the Asian Paper week, 1993. I am happy to be back in China and meet again many old friends. But I do feel humble to come to this country which is the cradle of non-wood pulp and papermaking for 2000 years and where so much paper is already made from non-wood fibres - about 10 mio tons out of the 17,2 mio in 1992 (1). And where the annual growth rate for pulp and paper production was still 10% in the last few years and is so today.

Here two big international conferences on non-wood pulp and papermaking took place - 1988 in Beijing and 1992 in Shanghai - and so much information was presented how by research and in the many mills this extra production mostly from non-wood fibrous materials was and is produced in your country.

I find it difficult to contribute something new to these technologies and chemical tricks used here in the county. It seems that the time has come that other countries, also developed countries find new interest in the use of such fibres, like straw, which are available by the millions of tons each year for modem papermaking.

Maybe you will allow me first to update my paper, given 1992 during the 2nd International Non-Wood Pulping and Papermaking Conference, with the title New Trends in Non-Wood Pulping for Environmental Control."
