Trends in the Production of Computer, Photocopying, Thermal Sensitive and Specialty Papers, 1993 China Paper Conference Proceedings

In order to understand the current technical trends in the production of business papers, it is desirable to begin with a review of the trends in the marketplace which motivate changes in paper manufacturing technology. There is a divergence between the trends in industrialized and developing countries.

In North America and Europe, the trend is toward use of “plain paper” devices, especially among high volume users even though initial installation cost is significantly higher. Wide spread use of computers is causing a relative decline in the use of preprinted multiple copy business forms. Concern about the environment has also changed usage patterns in both packaging and communication papers. Packaging minimization has created a rapid increase in demand for pressure sensitive labels, but with a corresponding concern about recyclability of these papers.

In developing countries, there is continued growth in papers such as direct thermal imaging for facsimile machines. There is also rapid growth in the use of multiple set preprinted business forms, with carbonless paper replacing carbon paper manifold sets.

This paper will seek to discuss the trends and outlook in the various business paper grades.
