Predicting AOX Generation and Discharge Rates at Bleached Kraft Pulp Mills, 1998 Cluster Rule Symposium Proceedings

The impending implementation of the Cluster Rule has made predicting AOX releases a topic of considerable interest among U.S. bleached kraft pulp producers. Estimating AOX levels corresponding to different technology options is a prerequisite to choosing the best way to achieve compliance. To make useful predictions, it is necessary to know (1) how AOX generation depends on bleaching sequence and conditions, (2) how much AOX will be chemically destroyed as a result of mixing acid and alkaline filtrates, and (3) how much will be removed by biological mechanisms in the effluent treatment systems.
