My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
W. P. Woods, M. K. Joyce, A. Pekarovicova, T. W. Joyce--One possibility to improve flexo printing of corrugated board is to precalender the linerboard. This study evaluated two different types of calenders: the shoe calender and the hot/soft nip calender. The linerboard used in this study was commercially produced and was on-line, hard calendered. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between the quality of the printed samples and their calendering conditions. The results showed that the linerboard characteristics of water and ink absorption and surface roughness contribute significantly to print quality. The optical properties of delta gloss and print density, and to a lesser extent print mottle and gloss mottle, correlated with the subjective visual ranking of the samples according to print quality.
