Influence of Ultra Fine Surface Profile to Sheet and Print Gloss of Coated Paper, 2000 Coating Conference Proceedings

N. Matsuda, T. Ichihashi, Y. Zama--Coated papers are required to have excellent sheet and print gloss. Surface roughness of coated paper is well known to correlate with these properties. However, the relationship between surface profiles and these properties is not clear. So, we measured ultra fine surface profiles of coated papers using the ZYGO New View system. The principle this instrument is based on is the measurement of interference fringe variations. This is a technique for constructing an ultrafine three-dimensional profile accurately and rapidly without contacting the surface. In this study, we considered the influence of ultra fine surface profiles to sheet and print gloss of coated papers, and attempted to clarify the relationship between them with this technique. Then we generated the correlation between surface profile and gloss using a high frequency surface roughness parameter. As a result, it was found that considering the surface profile of a coated paper as a cluster of waves that had various frequencies, and processing complex surface profiles in terms of spatial frequencies and parameters, were very useful. In particular, the ultra fine surface profile of specific waves, with the spatial frequencies more than 30 mm -1 or 40 mm -1 , were found to greatly affect the sheet gloss of coated paper. Moreover, it was also found that print gloss was influenced by waves with a larger range of spatial frequencies than the specific waves that influenced the sheet gloss.
