Use of Synthetic Silicas in Coated Media for Ink-Jet Printing, 2000 Coating Conference Proceedings

Jones--The demand for ink-jet printing in office and commercial environments is still growing and the advent of the digital camera has boosted the consumer expectation for perfect photographic reproductions generated on the home printer. The quality of the final image is not only determined by the printer technology but also by the properties of the chosen ink and media. The use of a coated media is essential if images of high print and colour quality are to be attained. Synthetic silicas are one of the components often found in such coatings; their use allows fast drying of the ink, the generation of sharp text by reducing wicking, bleeding and feathering and the production of bright, vivid colours. The influence of silica properties on the performance (text, optical density, bleed, strike- through, cockle, colour purity) of coated paper used in ink-jet reproduction is discussed in this paper.
