Binder Modification for Blade-Coated Inkjet Papers, Applications of PVP Copolymers Or: What to do to Offset Coated Grades to Make Them Inkjet Printable, 2001 Coating Conference Proceedings
R. Nigel Jopson--Developments in inkjet printing will require higher volume coated grades produced primarily on blade coating lines. Present coated inkjet technology relies on immobilizing the inkjet ink with specialty pigments of high internal or external surface area. These pigments are not opaque, tend to be expensive and are not always easy to run. There are other means to produce inkjet-printable coated papers. One approach was to develop blade coating formulations with absorbent bentonite clays as the dye fixative component of the coating. As an alternative, a polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)-starch binder system was also developed where the inkjet imaging medium could be fixed by the binder rather than the pigment.
