Determination of SB-Latex Distribution at Paper Coating Surfaces with FTIR/ATR Spectroscopy, 2001 Coating Conference Proceedings
Mari Halttunen--The FTIR/ATR (Attenuated Total Reflection infrared spectroscopy) has been used for the analysis of binder distribution at the coating surface. A diamond micro-ATR crystal in an IR microscope made it possible to achieve an analysis depth of less than 2 µm combined with a lateral area of approx. 60 µm in diameter. Both the base paper sheet and the coating on the coated paper are highly inhomogeneous on a microscopic scale. Therefore a larger area can be investigated by collecting IR/ATR spectra from several areas next to each other, i.e. by collecting an IR/ATR map. In this study, for instance, the binder distribution map was formed from 1000*1000 µm area by collecting 400 IR/ATR spectra with 50 µm steps. The binder content at each of these 400 points was determined by using multivariate PLS calibration or IR band height ratios. The same measurement also indicates how well the paper coating covers the base paper.
