Kaolin Use In Spray Coating, 2004 Coating and Graphic Arts Conference
Spray coating technology has the potential to bring economic benefits through low production costs, improved
runnability and lower furnish costs. However, to date there have been difficulties in running formulations with
significant amounts of kaolin, with nozzle abrasion, variable spray formation, poor fibre coverage and poor print
performance reported as problems. We have demonstrated that these can be overcome by optimising the coating
solids and kaolin type for each formulation. Even though the applied coating solids level is significantly lower than
that used in either blade or metered size press (MSP) coaters, the low impact force means that the coating remains on
the base paper surface. The paper and print quality of the spray coated LWC offset papers can be comparable with
that of commercial MSP coated grades.
