My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) is used both as a filler and a coating pigment in paper and board to improve the optical properties of the finished product. Many different crystal forms of PCC are available of different shapes and average particle sizes. In this work, the optical, surface, and printing properties of a fine aragonite PCC are compared to an engineered GCC, fine GCC, and rhombic PCC. The pigments were compared in two coatings formulations: a coated freesheet (CFS) and lightweight coating (LWC). In both applications, the fine aragonite PCC provided high sheet gloss. In CFS the fine aragonite PCC gave better opacity and brightness than the fine GCC and engineered GCC. In LWC the PCCs gave better opacity and brightness compared to the fine GCC. The high shear stability of the fine aragonite was found to be significantly better than the engineered GCC.
