My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
A new device for on-line, real-time measurement of calender roll deposits is described. The Calender Deposit Detector (CDD) is based on an array of photodetectors implemented to monitor diffuse reflectance of light from the polished surface of a calender roll. A clean roll will have low diffuse reflectance, but as debris accumulates on the roll, the diffuse reflectance will increase proportionately. Quantitative measurement of the light allows for sensitive, rapid determination of the relative amount of material on the roll. The configuration of the equipment makes it sensitive to accumulation of any diffusely-reflective material on polished-surface roll equipment. General capabilities are described and three case studies are presented where the technology was used to assist paper coating formulation development at a pilot-scale paper coater with an on-line hot/soft calender.
