Measurement of Coat Weight Distribution by Rapid Thermography, 2004 Coating and Graphic Arts Conference

The inhomogeneous mass distribution of coated papers causes temperature patterning on the web during drying. We used rapid infrared thermography to record two-dimensional real time web temperature snapshots on a running pilot coating machine. The coat weight distribution was calculated from the temperature field by a new point-by-point simulation of the drying process. We assume that this simulation technique will allow the prediction of the drying process heterogeneity after coating, depending on the drying strategy.
