Measurement of Latex Surface Energy and its Role in Paper Coating Applications, 2004 Coating and Graphic Arts Conference
The surface properties of latex binder play an important role in the performance of paper coatings. Surface energetics can be
determined by the contact angle measurement method and inverse gas chromatography. Using the contact angle measurement
method, it is also possible to determine the polar/non-polar characteristics of the surface. With the inverse gas chromatography
technique, the surface polar character is further defined as acidic and/or basic. In this presentation, parameters affecting the
surface energy of latexes of interest to the paper coating industry, such as different co-monomers, carboxylation, and other
functional modifiers, as determined using the contact angle measurement and inverse gas chromatography will be discussed.
Examples of how surface energy of latex affect the paper coating performance, such as print properties and coating strength, will
also be reviewed.
