My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
The objective of the study was to develop a binder which combines good runnability on the film coater at 1700 m/min with good gloss development for online high speed calendering and high stiffness. Three standard binders were selected as benchmarks for their individually maximized single property profile of good runnability or gloss. Following adjustment of the latex properties to achieve low viscosity of the coating colors at high shear rates, good runnability was achieved. The binder properties important for gloss and stiffness were optimized using dynamical mechanical spectroscopy. Easy calendering and high gloss development were reached by a low elastic modulus at high temperature. High stiffness was achieved with a high glass transition temperature. The properties of high binding strength and high ink gloss were maintained.
Pilot coater and mill experience confirmed the successful development concept. The binder provided good runnability, high stiffness and high gloss. The properties of good binding strength and ink gloss were maintained.
