Relationship Between Hollow Sphere Pigment Geometry and Optical Performance of Finished Paper Coatings, 1991 Coating Conference Proceedings
Solid sphere and hollow sphere synthetic pigments have been used for some time to enhance the sheet gloss and print gloss of coated papers. This paper summarizes the results of a study of the relationship between synthetic pigment geometry and the optical performance of finished paper coatings. In the case of hollow sphere pigments, both particle size and void volume have a major positive impact on performance. The direction of the particle size effect is in the opposite direction in the case of the solid sphere pigment. A mechanistic explanation of the results is presented and supported by scanning electron micrographs of the coated surfaces and freeze fractured cross sections of the coatings.
