The silica microparticle wet-end system has been widely used in coated woodfree papers, primarily to increase speed and raise filler levels. While pursuing these economic objectives, many mills have seen improvement in print quality. This improvement stems from several aspects of the microparticle application, including improved formation, higher strength, and higher filler content. This paper reviews examples of quality improvements and discusses how they were achieved through wet end optimization.
