My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
The water transfer mechanism of coating color into base stock with different dwell time and its effect on sheet properties were studied using a high speed pilot coater equipped with a VDTA (Variable Dwell Time Applicator) and a flooded nip applicator. The relationship between the dewatering and the surface latex concentration as well as the gloss distribution were also studied. Results indicated the effect of filter cake on dewatering before blade metering in the case of flooded nip application. Negative effects with short dwell time with VDTA on the sheet property nor printability were not observed. It was suggested that the main factor which affected the properties of the coated paper was water penetration between the blade and drying section.
