Absorption of Starch During Surface Sizing with Different Methods, 1991 Coating Conference Proceedings

The purpose of this study has been to examine the dynamic sorption of starch into paper in the surface sizing process. The influence of external pressure and the most important liquid characteristics on the sorption rate of starch are discussed. The viscosity of the starch solution seems to be the most important liquid parameter determining the sorption rate. At the same time the viscosity is the dominating temperature dependent parameter. The degree of cationization of the starch has, to the extent investigated in this study, no influence on the sorption rate. The total uptake of starch in an industrial surface sizing process is influenced by many factors, one of which is sorption. The role of starch sorption during surface sizing was therefore investigated in different pilot units.
