Two technologies which have been applied to the on-line measurement of coat weight; oven dry differential and ash differential, are reviewed. The relative accuracy, ideal application and limitations of each technology are discussed. An evaluation of the ability of each method to accurately locate cross machine coat weight variations is presented, and the importance of scanner synchronization is stressed. On-line results for the beta and ash differential methods are presented along with some considerations of error propagation. Finally, the mechanisms, sensitivities and responses involved in cross machine blade control are discussed.
