Reducing Mottle Through Coating Structure Design, 1993 Coating Conference Proceedings

The effect of the coating layer structure on reducing print mottle was investigated. Coated paper was prepared with three latexes and four kinds of base stocks by using a pilot coater. We designed a weakly cationized latex and a low Tg one for comparison with a standard latex. Base stocks used here were prepared in the presence of a surface and/or internal sizing agent. Print mottle was reduced in the case of coating colors using the weakly cationized latex and a low Tg latex as compared to the use of standard latex. It was confirmed that these two coating layers have a more porous structure. In the case of the base stock without surface sizing, the coated layer was slightly porous and its print mottle was also somewhat reduced. In this study, we confirmed that the coating color has a stronger influence on reducing print mottle than the base stock.
