My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
F. Vidal, J.C. Pommier, J. Pouyet
The need to understand coating colors behavior at high shear rates (106 s-1) has lead the paper industry to investigate complex methods of rheological measurement. The well known capillary viscometer uses a circular geometry. A new original idea consists in changing the blade into a rheometer integrated at the coating head. Design of this new device and calculations were made considering the blade nip as a rectangular slit. Results from trials on papeteries de Condat pilot coater were then compared with capillary viscometer measurements. Thus we will be able to connect runnability problems with coating color viscous behavior.
