Styrene-Butadiene Latex Binders and Coating Structure, 1993 Coating Conference Proceedings
Most coatings on paper and board contain a significant quantity of air filled voids, which have a major influence on the optical, mechanical and absorbency properties of the coatings. The voids are formed during the coating drying process, with several factors influencing their size and number.
In this paper, the effect of latex binder styrene-butadiene ratio on coating void fraction is reported for coatings of well defined coat weight spread on plastic film. The results are interpreted in terms of the physical properties of the binder used and the coating drying process. Ink absorbency and gloss results for the same coatings are also given.
Together, the results lead to a suggested modification of a previously published mechanism of coating structure formation during drying. The modified mechanism has implications for the problem of print mottle on coated paper and board.
