Using XPS to Estimate Relative Pigment Concentrations on Coated Paper, 1994 Coating Conference Proceedings

XPS(X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) may be used to estimate pigment concentrations on coated paper surfaces. XPS examines chemical composition in the first 30-80A from the surface over a wide area(600 micron diameter analysis area). In this study, data were collected on kaolin-TiO2-CaCO3 pigment mixtures and coated reference papers, then they were compared with theoretical values. The influence of calendering, coat weight and binder type on relative pigment concentrations was examined. The results obtained with systematically prepared reference papers have been successfully used to estimate relative pigment concentrations in coated paper products. At 5 weight percent and less, the TiO2 estimates become unreliable.
