The purpose of this study was to establish a correlation between coating colour characteristics and coated board properties, using different water soluble polymers as coating colour thickeners. The characterization was performed as an initial evaluation of the coating colour properties, to establish a solid basis for further studies of the coated board properties. The application of these coating colours, obtained coated board properties and printing results, are discussed in Part 2.

The coating colours were thoroughly characterized by rheological measurements in a wide shear rate range, combined with water retention and water phase viscosity measurements. These characterizations were performed in the temperature range that prevailed during the coating trials.

Realistic properties can be obtained, when coating colours are characterized at prevailing coating temperatures, and especially when measuring the actual applied coating colours in pilot trials. This was observed especially during the rheological measurements at higher shear rates that correlated with the coated surface properties.
