This study provides information about the performance of two different bent blades pre honed in mill production, steel blade with a ceramic tip and steel blade with a hardened tip. The study was made on a pilot-coater top-coating pre-coated board. The different coater blades used when top-coating were compared for coating colours with different water soluble polymers as thickeners. The properties and printability of the top-coated board was determined. The top-coated board was on-line calendered using two different nip configurations, before the surface properties were determined. The properties and printability were affected by the water soluble polymers, blade types and calendering conditions. Steel blades with a ceramic tip increases the gloss of a double coated solid bleached board as well as increases the print gloss for a full tone image. Xanthan gum can be used a thickener in a coating colour for the top-coating on a double coated board achieving decreased roughness, increased water absorption, increased surface strength, increased full tone print image gloss and acceptable visual print appearance with low mottling when applied with a steel blade with a hardened tip and extended calendering nip configuration.
