Blade coating has reached a high level of quality. The roll applicator plus inverted blade technology has established levels of quality which other methods now use as a basis for comparison. However, as the need for faster running machines becomes more important due to economic reasons, the drawbacks of the roll applicator technology also become more apparent. An irregular coating layer will be applied due to the film splitting at the exit of the nip between applicator roll and backing roll. This streaky appearance will lead to rejection of the paper from those printers who are dedicated to highest quality prints. The new coater presented in this paper will not suffer from this problem, even at very high speeds. The results from a mill installation prove the superior paper quality level achievable.
