Predicting Print Mottle: A Method of Differentiating Between Three Distinctively Different Types of Mottle: Backtrap Mottle, Water Sensitivity Mottle, and..., 1994 Coating Conference Proceedings
N. P. Sandreuter
There is a lot of confusion in identifying the source of mottle when a coated paper shows print mottle on press. This paper presents a series of laboratory tests that, using paper and ink, give an accurate understanding of why the mottle occurred. By knowing why the mottle occurs, short term adjustments on press and long term adjustments in coating formulation and papermaking on the paper machine can be made to correct the type of mottle being seen in the production print. Tests can be used to monitor changes in the paper coating formulation, and can incorporate various combinations of ink, paper, and fountain solution. These tests can then be used to predict when mottle will occur before going to press.
