Evaluation of the Internal and the Surface Structure of Paper Using Nontraditional Cross-Sectioning, 1994 Coating Conference Proceedings

R. A. Peterson, J. G. Griffith

A technique has been developed to observe the internal and the surface structure of paper simultaneously. This cross-sectional technique allows precise ultramicrotomy of embedded paper while also allowing an unaffected surface of the sheet to be observed. By allowing the sheet to be embedded using traditional techniques and then sectioning using an ultramicrotomy, the internal structure is preserved. This is unlike most hand cutting methods for non-embedded samples which will compact or otherwise distort the sheet and coating. Allowing a selected surface of the microtomed sample to be exposed without contact with the embedding resin, surface features of the sheet become available for simultaneous observation with internal features. All observations reported were made using either light or scanning electron microscopy.
