Prediction of Velocity and Coat Weight Limits Based on Filtercake Formation, 1994 Coating Conference Proceedings

A model is proposed to predict the maximum velocity at which a blade coater can operate before runnability problems occur. This model is based on fluid mechanics. It includes the formation of a filtercake on the paper surface and paper roughness. Filtercake formation leads to large pressure pulses under the blade which drive more fluid from the coating into the paper. The model predicts the maximum speed and the blade forces for a given coat weight and paper roughness. Many runnability problems seem to correlate with this event of coating dewatering. Data from a number of researchers are compared to the model. The model will provide a tool to optimize coating solids and web velocity for given coat weight goals and paper properties.
