Use of a Laboratory Cylindrical Coater to Predict Heat Set Web Offset Blister Tendency in Coated Papers, 1995 Coating Conference Proceedings
Paper blistering on a heat set web offset press, caused by web moisture vaporising, can limit press oven temperatures and hence press speed. This paper describes a new technique using the infra-red lamps of a laboratory cylindrical coater to induce blister in coated and printed papers, allowing accurate prediction of blister tendency. The method offers the significant advantages over established test methods, of one pass testing a large number of samples, using commercial printing inks and yielding enhanced differentiation between samples. Data is presented which accurately distinguishes between samples of various coating pigment types, latex binder composition and molecular weight, base moisture, substance and other variables. The same trends were subsequently observed on a commercial heat set web offset printing press.
