MACHINE AND DRIVE In 1989, Zanders started up a new coater for art paper in the Bergisch Gladbach mill. The working width is 3.20 meters, and the current capacity is 150,000 m/t per year. There are six coating heads installed on the off-machine coater, with two blade coaters placed in the precoater section. The other four coaters are used for alternative operation during top coating. Of these four coaters, two are blade-type, and two are a proprietary design. For drying and conditioning of the paper, the coater is equipped with two infrared banks, four conventional air dryer sections, four banks of cylinders, and four cooling sections. Ninety-three guide rolls and 24 spreader rolls lead the paper through the 130 meter long coater section. The maximum operating speed is about 1,500 m/min. CONSTRUCTION DATA Coater C3 - year of construction 1989 - working width 3,20 m - basis weight range * basepaper 45 to 220 g/m 2 * finished paper 60 to 300 g/m 2 - max. speed 1,500 m/min - machine length 130 m, paperweb 460 m - 6 coating heads - drying and cooling * gas-heated IR-radiators * 14 steam-heated air flotation dryers * 4 cooling cylinder sections (each 3 or 4 cylinders) * 4 drying cylinder sections each 6 cylinders Fig. 1: Construction data coater C3 Our engineers decided on a unique multi-motor drive, which would operate only with three-phase AC voltage and vector regulation. The motor system consists of 19 main drives with 132 to 250 kW, as well as 126 auxiliary drives with 7.5 to 30 kW; 15 of the 22 tension measuring points are used for regulation of the drive.
