Cross direction (CD) coat weight control on blade coaters has rapidly developed since tentative beginnings in the early 1990s. Total engineered solutions consisting of new actuator systems, backing bar designs, measurement and control techniques have been developed specifically for this purpose. Results from recent CD coat weight control installations will be reviewed with special attention paid to the techniques used to minimize grade recovery time following blade changes.
