A series of studies were conducted to assess relationship between kaolin particle size, particle size distribution, particle shape, scattering coefficient, total coating void volume, relative sediment volume, slurry and coating color rheology. Consideration of the coating void sizes, hydrodynamic volume of kaolin particles, and total packing of coating ingredients led to the design of a engineered kaolin, which has a unique particle size distribution and carefully controlled morphology. In LWC applications, the engineered kaolin pigment demonstrated improved runnability as well as coated sheet optical and printing properties compared to No.2 and standard delaminated kaolin.
