My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
This paper describes a new coating immobilization tester. The method employs a conventional infrared (IR) moisture sensor. During the coating immobiIization process, the IR response curve exhibits two criticaI turning points that correspond to the two coating immobilization points defined by the gloss test method Furthermore, the critical points on the IR response curve are easier to be determined and have better repeatability than the critical points on the gloss curve. This new method was used to study the effect of flocculated coating systems on the time to coating immobilization and the coating immobilization solids level. The results showed that the flocculated coatings immobilized faster and at lower immobilization solids than the well-dispersed coating systems.
