My TAPPI Story: Doug Coffin
TAPPISAFE
We present results of our ongoing study on the rheology of coating colors. For this study we chose simple coating colors made up of kaolin and latex and report results on the transient viscosity at low shear rate and small-amplitude oscillatory data obtained using a controlled strain rheometer. The rheological properties are compared to runnability results from a Cylindrical Laboratory Coater. We report a surprisingly good correlation between low-deformation transient rheological measurements and runnability. Although in the coating process deformation rates are very large (10 6 s -1 ), the contact time is extremely small (10 -5 s). Thus, coating colors are better characterized by low deformation rheological tests.
