My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
An experimental Short Dwell type (SDTA) coating head has been developed for the CLC-6000 TM High Speed, Cylindrical Laboratory Coater. The experimental SDTA coating head was compared to the standard puddle pond to determine the maximum, defect-free coating speed. For the LWC coating formulation and wood containing rawstock used in this study, the experimental SDTA coater head can produce a satisfactory coating at speeds up to 1280 m/min (4200 ft/min). This is over 365 m/min (1200 ft/min) higher than is capable with the normal puddle pond. In addition, the coating speed of 1280 m/min is comparable to many production SDTA coaters producing LWC grades. The results from this study should be valuable for those that use or depend on information derived from high speed laboratory coaters. It provides a preliminary assessment of the performance of a laboratory scale SDTA type coater head.
