Novel Coating Talc for LWC Rotogravure Applications, 1997 Coating Conference Proceedings

This paper refers to the development of a coating talc which has shown significant potential for cost-effective improvement in paper quality and rotogravure printability. It discusses results of two CLC trials conducted with two typical LWC rotogravure formulations. The effect of macrocrystalline talc in both formulations was found to be significant, especially with formulations containing 30 parts talc. Macrocrystalline talc showed significant improvements in blade coater runnability, rotogravure printability, surface pick strength, and coefficient of friction reduction with no significant impact on optical properties. These results indicate the possibility for paper manufacturers to improve rotogravure printability, machine efficiency and productivity while reducing crepe wrinkles and core bursts when formulating with macrocrystalline talc.
