In this work, we present rheological properties of six different coating colors made with two different kaolin pigments, three different thickeners (one cellulosic and two associative polymers) and two latices.We discuss these properties in relation to runnability and water penetration. The stress growth function normalized with respect to the steady shear stress is shown to correlate very well with the water penetration data, which are strongly dependent on the thickener used. This stress growth function as well as the peak in the stress growth used before do not correlate with runnability data obtained on a CLCÔ II (Cylindrical Laboratory Coater). The appearance of wet streaks and a coat development criterion are used to assess the runnability. Apparent elongational viscosity data have been obtained at high deformation rates using an orifice flowmeter. The elongational behavior is proposed as a better index of runnability on the CLC, compared to the Hercules End Point and the stress growth function.
