The Optiblade coating device of Valmet is investigated by means of 3D numerical simulation. The simulation results are compared with experimental results obtained from pilot coater runs. Poorly mixed regions in the distribution chamber are identified as a possible source for the formation of scratches of about 1 mm width. Other potential sources for scratch formation as turbulence or pressure fluctuations at the blade can be ruled out by comparison of numerical and experimental results.
