Model coating layers were evaluated in tension on a mechanical tester over a range of pigment volume concentrations. A novel method was developed to produce free coating layers. The elastic modulus, the tensile strength, and strain to failure were reported over a wide range of pigment volume concentrations. Results were compared to several filled polymer composite theories.
The elastic modulus had a sudden increase near the critical pigment volume concentration. In addition, the strain to failure had a rapid decrease near the critical pigment volume concentration. At high pigment volume concentrations, the elastic modulus decreased and the coating layers were weak. A number of different composite theories were compared to the results; no current theory captures the behavior near the critical pigment volume concentration nor explains the mechanical behavior over the entire range of pigment volume concentrations.
