An experimental study of free jet application in pigment coating has been made. The comparison of dewatering in flooded nip and free jet confirms that the latter results in significantly lower water penetration into the base sheet, and suggests that the coating color can be formulated at higher solids or that coater runnability can be improved. On the other hand, at constant solids, the paper testing results indicate no advantage in surface properties for the free jet system in the studied speed range. The machine conditions in free jet application were found to have a significant effect on the quality of the transferred coating film. It is proposed that a delicate balance between the kinetic energy of the applied film and the counter-pressure of air determines the quality of the jet-film transfer.
