The retention of calcium carbonate was studied under laboratory conditions using the Weyerhaeuser developed RAEV (Retention Aid Evaluation Variant) test unit (1). The retention systems evaluated included a cationic polymer based system; an anionic polymer based system; a di-cation polymer based system and an anion/cation based polymer system. The studies were carried as a part of a project designed to understand the mode of retention of calcium carbonate in the neutral/alkaline papermaking process.
