Future Developments of the Coating Machine, 1998 Coating Conference Proceedings

Coated papers are produced today more efficiently than ever before. There are a large number of big, fast new machines installed in the 1990’s with clearly lower production costs than older machines. On the other hand coated papers have evolved to lighter, weaker sheets, requiring more and more coater runnability.

This paper explores the development drivers in coating machinery that are leading to faster speeds and better runnability. It also covers what solutions have been found already, especially in the coating application head area. New ideas relating to the coater machine as a whole, are described, such as Continuous Drying Tunnels to maximize the drying within a given space, and Supported Web Runs, some aspects of which we are likely to see in the near future.
